I present here the accumulated experiences that are my daily quest for tastemaking. This is where I will house things that I find interesting in the culinary world, and that I feel worthy to share.
What: Roasted Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Smoked Salt, Fresh Basil, Mozzarella, St Johns Olive Loaf //Oven Roasted Corn with Fleur de Sel and Herb de Provence // Union White Wine
Where: Home
Thoughts: Simple yet amazing, that was the theme for this meal. Go to the farmers market on Wednesday at Bloor-Borden and see what inspired me. Summer is all about fresh eating.
Thoughts: Needed to use some arborio rice, and pooled my Twitter friends as to what flavour rice pudding I should make. This won out. David proclaimed the virtues of a dessert he had for Summerlicious one year at The Corner House (which happens to be on my street), and Google found a Tyler Florence version.
Thoughts: I always use Bonita's granola as the base when i'm making granola, and this time I threw in toasted coconut and some mixed nuts, seeds, and raisins I had sitting around.
What: 30 Minute Scrambled Eggs with Lemon Fetish // BusterRhinos Maple Bacon // Market Strawberries and Peaches
Where: Home
Thoughts: A tremendous amount of patience will yield some of the best eggs you have tasted in your life. Google it. This was one of my most memorable lunches in recent memory, and I will make this again soon.
Thoughts: Not a lot of options for lunch with the nieces and nephews, and sadly this looks better than it tasted. Grilled cheese with bacon and tomato. Not bad, just not good.
Thoughts: Michelle is always being inspired by something, or someone, to make some cool treats at their shop. This one was inspired by Momofuku Milk Bar in NYC. Go check out her latest flavours, always a good splurge.
What: Beef Burger // Sauteed Beet Greens, Radishes and Peas
Where: Home
Thoughts: I wondered how to cook radish greens, because I was certain they were edible. The results: bacon fat, chilli oil, wilt and sprinkle with smoked salt. MMM! Add to the pan some fresh squeezed lemon juice and saute some thinly sliced radishes and shelling peas. Not too bad, if I do say so. Very different flavours, and unexpectedly good.
Thoughts: Something I had been waiting for since a trip to Montforte Dairy in Stratford was a run of their wonderful sheep milk yogurt, nice and sharp and tangy, it worked perfectly with the rest of my farmers market berries.
Thoughts: After a long absence, I decided to give the patio at School another chance. Service in the past had not been great, and the food never wowed me so I took a break. The calamari was really tasty, crispy, delicious. Fish tacos weren't bad, but im still on the hunt for better.
What: Vanilla Ice Cream with Ontario Blueberries and Raspberries
Where: Home
Thoughts: The ice cream was from Il Gelaterie, and was amazing. First wild blueberries of the year, and some great raspberries. What a refreshing and rewarding treat.
Thoughts: This is my go to Thornhill spot for falafel, but I was feeling in a meat mood so I went for the shawarma. Next time I will stick with the chicken, its better.
Thoughts: A very good pie, and I will return to QMP in the future. I liked the space and the fact that they take reservations, but didn't love that there were no starters to be had unless you went prix fixe. Also, NO local wine is a major turn off.
